KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jeremy Reno, Orovada, Nev., was selected as the 2017 Hereford Herdsman of the Year at the 2017 National Western Stock Show in Denver Jan. 14. Selected by his peers - Hereford herdsmen and breeders - Reno was honored prior to the selection of the grand champion horned and polled Hereford females.
Reno, originally from Jay, Oklahoma, serves as herdsman for Brumley Farms in Orovada, Nevada, a position he has held for more than eight years. He is responsible for caring for the show cattle, traveling to all national shows and checking cows and calves in the pastures each day.
Body type RR: Reno said he was humbled to receive the award, but believes it is about more than just showing.
"Everybody is going to say it is an honor and humbling, and I agree with that," Reno said. "But there are a lot of farms that don’t bring cattle to Denver that have great cattlemen. We raise these cows for the commercial cowman who puts meat on the table for people all across the world."
Body type RR: Reno credits much of his success and work ethic to having great mentors growing up, including his father and grandmother.
"My grandmother gave me my first heifer, and she managed my cousin’s vet clinic in town, so I grew up hanging around the vet clinic," Reno said. "Hanging around the doctors instilled a love in me for animals and taking care of animals."
His love for animals has turned into a lifelong career for Reno, but showing is only part of what he loves.
"Someday I hope to be known as a good cowman rather than just a guy who can clip a show calf," Reno said. "I would rather drive around and look at baby calves than work in the show barn all day."
The Hereford Herdsman of the Year award honors an outstanding herdsman in the Hereford breed each year at the NWSS. Hereford herdsmen and breeders vote for the Herdsman of the Year, and the award is presented annually at the NWSS.
