This week the Las Animas Trojan track and field squad traveled to Springfield to compete in the Rick Hartley Invitational meet. The Trojans, shorthanded, competed on a beautiful spring day in Springfield – a weather anomaly.

On the girls’ side, Leticia Martinez shaved nearly a second off of her 200M time, Makayla Huffman took nearly seven seconds off of her 1,600M time and placed eighth in the event, and Abbey Elliot added three inches to her shot put throw.

The boys’ team had a few more in attendance, and placed a few more as well. Jeremiah Skinner shaved .02 off of his 100M time and nearly half of a second off of his 200M time, Gabe DeVargas took two seconds off of his 400M time, and Maranatha DeVargas took 13 seconds off of his 800M time. The Trojans’ 4x800 boys team are still ranked 16th in the state. If they are still ranked 18th or better at the end of the season, they will compete in the state competition.

This week the Trojans travel to La Junta for the annual Tiger Relays. The girls’ team will compete on Thursday and the boys’ team will compete on Friday. On Saturday, both teams will compete in Holly at the annual Wildcat Invitational.
