On Saturday, May 6, the La Junta Rotary Club is throwing a Kentucky Derby Party at the Koshare Kiva to raise money for their dictionary project (giving every third grader in La Junta a dictionary of his or her very own). The party starts at 2:30 p.m. with cocktails and southern fare. At 4 p.m. it’s “Riders up!” for the greatest two minutes in sports, projected on a large screen.
The ladies are requested to wear hats. The gentlemen are asked to wear bow ties. The hat contest is sponsored by the Twisted Twig Florals in Swink and the Pink Lillies and Mint Juleps are sponsored by Big D’s Liquor Mart.
It’s a great opportunity not to miss the Kentucky Derby and to have fun while watching it, not to mention helping buy the third graders’ dictionaries. The party decorations in the colorful Koshare Kiva add to the atmosphere.
For food and drinks, the price is $25; for just food, the price is $15. Tickets are available at the Senior Center and Woodruff Memorial Library. No tickets are available at the door.
