The perfect parade, the perfect day
The Kids Rodeo Parade on Saturday morning was a smash hit, starring the standbys of summer La Junta: the kids on horses, led off by the Kids Rodeo Royalty, Ace of Spades Riding Club, the American Legion Honor Guard, the La Junta Tiger summer band, all the royalty from fiesta, fair and bazaar, the Southeast Colorado Antique Vehicle Club, the Chamber of Commerce and one political candidate, Ed Vela. They could have expected to be sweltering in the heat, but surprise! Saturday was a nice, bright, cool day, until it exploded into a thunderstorm on Saturday night, complete with lightning, plenty of thunder and torrential rain.
There was a little over an hour delay at the Saturday night rodeo, and the awards were given indoors at the cowboy church. Nevertheless, all went well, with Queen Abigail Schmidt, Princess Reese Dutton, Tiny Tot Princess Sadie Buhr, Queen First Attendant Jessie Pendleton and Tiny Tot Princess Donna Fern on the job as the good horsewomen they are. A big salute goes out to Kevin Waggoner, Teresa Walz, Hassan Mirakhor and family and all the cowboys and cowgirls that make this old-time La Junta event happen in the age of cellphones and computers. Also, looking good, La Junta Tiger summer band!
