The Rocky Ford Garden Club will meet 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1 at the home of Phyllis Adkins, the Club’s Secretary. Phyllis lives at 23634 CR FF, Rocky Ford, between highways 50 and 266, north of Swink and just west of County Road 24.5.
This is our spring meeting where we will discuss planting and exchange books and plants. We will also discuss a best plants project where we will try to better understand the plants best suited to growing in our area.
The meeting is open to all. You do not have to live in Rocky Ford; many members do not. You do not even have to have a garden to become a member. If you have an interest in gardens and growing and in talking, listening and learning, do come. For over a half century, the Rocky Ford Garden Club members learn how to better our community.
We urge you to register online and attend an amazing upcoming event – The Colorado Native Plant Society will host a native plant tour and educational event, in conjunction with the Rocky Ford Garden Club, on Thursday, May 31.
The walking tour will be held at the Pueblo Army Depot located about 5 miles east of Pueblo. The Society’s Southeast Chapter’s Field Trip will focus on the Southern Shortgrass Prairie from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The tour leaders will be Rich Rhoades and Ben Berlinger, both retired from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. We will view southern shortgrass prairie plants and wetland plants near ponds and seeps. This 23,000 acre (35 square miles) parcel began in 1942 as a storage area for WWII munitions. The grasslands have not been grazed since the late 1990s.
Easy walking - bring lunch and plenty of water. Be prepared for warm/hot weather and mosquitos. This is a military installation and they require a photo ID from each of us. If you have questions, contact Rich Rhoades at email@example.com, or call (719) 250-5993. Come learn about our shortgrass prairie.
See the Colorado Native Plant Society website (https://conps.org/mfm-event-calendar/#!event/2018/5/31/se-chapter-field-trip-southern-shortgrass-prairie) to register - and do share this with anyone who might be interested. Hope to see you all there!
