Colorado Cattlemen’s Association members can hear first-hand the issues the Colorado Legislature will address next year at a State Capitol visit, legislative briefing and lunch hosted by CCA on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Denver.
The Masonic Center is at 1370 Grant St., less than one block southeast of the capitol. Nearby parking is available for a few dollars.
CCA members won’t want to miss this event. Although many of the legislators are familiar with the beef industry in Colorado, many others are not aware of our concerns. CCA members are also reminded of how the legislative process is initiated and how they can influence the system.
The schedule for the legislative session is as follows:
• 9 a.m. - Capitol visit when CCA members meet at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center building banquet room. Members will go as a group to the capitol to learn about current bills being discussed that can have an impact on the beef industry in Colorado.
• 10:30 a.m. - CCA Legislative Briefing at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center Building. CCA lobbyist Danny Williams and others will explain ag-related bills that are expected to be proposed during the upcoming legislative session and how they could benefit or harm agriculture. CCA’s membership-guided policy on issues will be reviewed, and members in attendance will have an opportunity to explain how beef producers from various parts of Colorado feel about current issues.
* Noon – CCA Legislative Lunch – Scottish Rite Masonic Center Building. This is a good time to talk to your state legislators and express to them your concerns or approval of the various bills that were discussed at the legislative briefing. CCA is again expecting a record turn-out of legislators due to the close proximity of the Capitol to the Scottish Rite Building. To attend, CCA members should send their name, address and payment of $20 to the CCA office by January 14.
The National Western Stock Show will also be busy on Jan. 20 with their Replacement Female Sale at the Livestock Center Auction arena in the NWSS yards. It will begin with the NWSS Bellringer Commercial Female Sale at 2 p.m., followed by the CCA Carload Producer Heifer Sale.
And be sure to stick around for the Pfizer Stockman’s Night Barbecue at 6 p.m. where CCA members will be actively “Recruiting for the Cure!” CCA is giving back to the Colorado community by donating to breast cancer research for each new member recruited now through January. Each member who recruits a new member will receive a special pink-ribbon CCA lapel pin showing that they are “Recruiting for the Cure.” For each eight members recruited by a current CCA member during the campaign, the recruiter will receive a limited-edition, pink CCA shirt.
Breast cancer has directly affected many families in the extended CCA family. It will continue to affect women, and even some men, until a cure can be found. Every year in Colorado more than 2,800 men and women are diagnosed with breast cancer. This is a chance for each member of CCA to do their part for the women in their lives, while spreading the importance of joining an association such as CCA.
Trevor Smith, CCA Membership Committee chair asks, “Are you involved in the beef industry? Do you enjoy having a steak or hamburger? Then you need to be a member of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. Now is the perfect time join. Not only will you be providing CCA with a larger voice to our state and national legislators, but you will be helping make a difference for breast cancer research.”
