Colorado 287 was closed Saturday between Wiley and Eads for about five hours because of to a two-semi head-on collision, according to a Colorado State Patrol report. At approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, a 2005 International semi-truck driven by Louis Washington III, 63, of Charlotte, N.C., was traveling northbound on Colorado 287.  The vehicle was about three miles south of Eads in icy conditions when it approached a southbound 2007 Volvo semi-truck driven by Raymond C. Lance, 31 of San Bernadino, Calif.

The northbound International truck began sliding into the southbound lanes of traffic.  Once it did so, the southbound Volvo truck also began sliding toward the center of Highway 287.  The two vehicles then collided head-on.  A 2000 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Rex Weimer, 54, of Greenwood Village, Colo., was also traveling southbound behind the Volvo.  Weimer attempted to avoid the collision by driving into the right shoulder, but the trailer of the International truck clipped the driver’s side of the 4-Runner, causing minor damage.

The International and the Volvo were eventually engulfed in flames.  However, both Lance and Washington were able to escape their vehicles on foot.  Lance and Washington were transported to Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads with minor injuries.  Weimer was not injured.  The Colorado State Patrol investigated the crash and cited Washington with careless driving resulting in bodily injury.

Lance was cited with exceeding the safe speed for the road conditions.  Highway 287 was re-opened at approximately 3:15 p.m. Saturday
