Rodeo Legend and Hall of Famer Harry Vold was on hand last Saturday at Cowboy Up to co-sign for fans “The Duke of the Chutes” written by Loren R. Whittemore. Whittemore and Vold signed copies and visited with many fans at the store.
When asked about himself, Whittemore said it would be easier for Vold to describe him than it would be to describe himself. Whittemore was more at ease discussing Vold, whom he pointed out, was making an appearance after having been released from the hospital the week before. Vold had been in for knee replacement surgery and was using a walker.
Vold was in very good spirits and he and Whittemore spent good amounts of time speaking with old friends and new from the Fowler area.
When asked why he wrote about Vold, Whittemore said, “I had been thinking about who to write about, then I remembered Vold had a lot of memorabilia.” He talked to Vold who told him if he thought there was a book in it, to go ahead.  “I grew up around rodeo, so it was natural to write this book.” Whittemore also said, “that Vold ‘spoiled him’ because he was so easy to write about, but would consider writing another book if something comes along.”
Whittemore has also written “An Illustrated History of Ranching in the Pikes Peak Region”, and co-authored “The Pikes Peak Range Rider” and a cowboy cookbook. He also edited the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Magazine for 20 years. Both Vold and Whittemore are located in Colorado. Vold has a ranch on the Huerfano River and Whittemore has a ranch 40 miles north of Fowler in the Edison area.
