It wasn't artistic, but the McClave Lady Cardinals ended their season in style, winning their final two games of the regular season.
On Tuesday, the Cards travelled to Kit Carson for their final District 2 contest of the season and came away with an ugly 50-34 win over the much improved Wildcats. On Thursday, McClave hosted Wiley on Senior Night and won 47-29.
McClave had already clinched the number one seed in the District 2 Tournament this week but were looking to finish their district schedule with an undefeated record. The Lady Cards struggled offensively for much of the night but fairly solid defense enabled them to keep a 10-point lead or more throughout the entire first half.
McClave went to their locker room with a 21-10 halftime lead. Led by sophomore Cassie Kent, Carson battled throughout the third stanza, trailing 36-22 at the end of three quarters. Behind eight points from Jerrica Mallard and six from Karlee Stuart, McClave put Carson away early in the final period, as they built a 24 point lead midway through the final quarter. Mallard, with 14 points in the second half, led all scorers with 23.
With all five of their seniors starting in their final home game of the year, McClave fell behind early in their game with another improved opponent, Wiley. The Lady Panthers led 13-9 after quarter one, but the McClave D stiffened in period two, allowing Wiley only four points.
Mallard had a big third quarter, scoring nine points in the period, as the Cardinals led 34-27 after three stanzas. It was all McClave in the final period, as they outscored the Panthers 13-2. Mallard, recognized before the game as the fifth girl in McClave history to score a 1,000 points in her career, had 18 points to lead the Cards, while fellow senior Shelby Coen had 11. Coen is averaging 10.9 over the last six games to bolster the Cardinal scoring attack.
McClave finishes the regular season with an 18-1 record, a fact not lost on Dick Peecher, McClave head coach.
"You have had a wonderful season. 18-1 is just incredible, but where do we go from here? I am glad that we could honor our seniors like we did, and I am proud of what they have accomplished at this school.
“We have struggled a bit offensively the last couple of weeks, but the important thing at this point in the season is surviving. As long as our defense is there, we can count on that being a constant. The real basketball season begins on Monday."
