The McClave Lady Cardinals breezed to their 16th victory of the season, a 68-13 victory over Granada, Friday night in Granada.
It moved their record to 16-1 on the season and 6-0 in District 2 play.
With their leading scorer, senior Jerrica Mallard, away on a family trip, the Cards relied on solid defense and three players in double figures to do the damage for them. The Cards were sharp out of the gate, outscoring Granada 18-3 in the opening quarter of play. From there, the lead lengthened throughout, 35-5 at halftime. McClave reserves played the final quarter and a half.
Junior Adrianne Cline, playing well offensively as of late, led the Cards in scoring with 14 points, while hauling in nine rebounds in a solid performance. Also in double figures for the Lady Cardinals were junior Anna Kuhns with 12 and senior Shelby Coen with 10. Junior Jordan Melgoza had nine points, while freshman Kelsey Thaxton added eight in just a quarter and a half of play.
McClave heads into the final week of the regular season on a roll, winning 16 consecutive games in a row.
"We want to finish the season on a strong note, heading into the district tournament," said head coach Dick Peecher.
"We haven't been tested since Eads, but our practices are very competitive, so I am not really worried about that. We play Kit Carson on Tuesday, then Wiley on Thursday in our final game of the season. Thursday is Senior Night, and we will say good bye to an outstanding senior group of girls."
The McClave JV team rolled to their 14th consecutive win of the season, winning the Baca South JV Tournament. They beat Rolla, Kansas, and South Baca to win the one-day tournament. It was their third tournament win of the season, winning the Holly JV and Wiley JV Tournaments earlier this season.
They will play their final game of the season this Thursday against Wiley. Their only two losses of the season were to varsity teams - Springfield and Baca South in the Ballard Tournament, the opening week of the season.
