The Otero Junior College Rodeo Team will be sponsoring The Genuine American Cowboy Concert on Saturday, Feb. 5, featuring Trent Willmon, singer and song-writer from Nashville. The concert is a fundraising event for the OJC Rodeo Team and will be held in the Otero Junior College Ed Stafford Theatre starting at 7 p.m.
Willmon’s country music career has taken him from the dancehalls of Texas to the Grand Ole Opry and countless other venues across the country – including the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Willmon’s newest album “Little Ol’ Café” was released on Nov. 16, 2010.
As a songwriter Willmon has written many songs recorded by other artists including Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Little Big Town and Wade Hayes. Steel Magnolia’s Billboard Top 5 “Keep On Lovin You” was written by Willmon as well as Montgomery Gentry’s Billboard #1 “Back When I Knew It All.”
Other artists who have recorded Willmon’s songs include Kevin Fowler, Granger Smith and Johnny Cooper. Roger Creager has recorded five of Willmon’s songs including his two latest hit singles, “Driven Home” and Swingin’ From the Chandeliers.”
John Grady, president of Sony-affiliated DMZ Records, describes Willmon as “not just a country singer – he is a poet, an artisan, and quite simply, the most interesting man I have met in my stay in Nashville. I challenged Trent and Frank Rogers (producer) to explore and grow on their next record, and they have done both, with enormous success,” said Grady.
Opening for Willmon will be up-and-coming country music star Rehme Sutton. Sutton was born in the cattle country of Burke, S.D. A fourth generation rancher, she grew up with boots, dirty jeans and a hard work ethic. Her ranching background helped her to excel in the rodeo arena where she received a rodeo scholarship at the University of Wyoming, being a key member of the Women’s College National Championship Team in 2008. Sutton graduated with a degree in pharmacy in 2010 and has moved home to be a relief pharmacist and help her family on the ranch.
Sutton’s passion for country music started as a young girl. She grew up listening to the likes of The Judds, Tanya Tucker, Chris Ledoux, Willie Nelson, Suzy Bogguss, and George Strait. With western heritage in her blood, Sutton learned to play the guitar while in college and performed in dusty arenas around the country, playing and singing between rodeo performances.
Tickets for The Genuine American Cowboy Concert on Saturday, Feb. 5, are available from any member of OJC Rodeo Team or by calling Debbie Phillips at (719) 384-6863. Tickets are $15 per person. Will-call tickets are available for credit cards purchases.
The concert on Feb. 5 will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ed Stafford Theatre in the Humanities Center on the OJC campus.
