Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta ended the ban on gays serving openly in the military by saying Friday that lifting “don’t ask, don’t tell” would not harm the military. A repeal of the Clinton-era law was signed into law by President Barack Obama in December, but Panetta had to confirm the move was safe.
